Eighteen months ago we moved into our house, and it has been a fun journey to make it feel more like home. It felt far from “homey” when we moved in, and it’s been so great to see the changes!

My latest project has been on-going, and it’s almost done. I’m planning to purchase a new ceiling fan (hopefully this week) and it will be DONE! We decided to makeover our family room a few months ago, and we love it! Next to the kitchen, it is the most widely used room in the entire house, and it just wasn’t working for us the way it was set up before. Tanner and I really wanted an L-shaped workspace for our computers, as well as a place the girls can do their homework when they get home from school…the need for a large workspace is actually what motivated us to re-do the room. Here are some before and afters:

The dark woodwork and dark fireplace, mixed with mis-matched furniture made for a room that drove me crazy!

A lot of primer and creamy-white paint for the trim, backdoor, and fireplace…the chair rail taken down…a pale yellow for the walls…lots of hours of work, and here’s what it look like now:

Painting the door make a huge difference in the room! The curtains are actually canvas painting dropcloths transformed into curtains. Each panel was only $9, and we love them!

The corner of the family room that used to house our loveseat became the perfect spot for our workspace...

The tabletop came from IKEA, and we used the legs from an old chemistry lab table we found several years ago at the side of the curb. We love having our workspace on the main floor now!

We had a large empty wall-space once the room was almost done. I really wanted a bench for the space, but they were all so expensive. I found a 9-foot church pew at a thrift store, lugged it home, and had my brother and Tanner cut 4 feet off of it. After several coats of primer, paint, and polyurethane it looked beautiful! I love having the extra seating, as well as the storage baskets underneath.

A cheap IKEA shelf, paired with an antique plant hanger with vintage hooks, made for a beautiful shelf to display our pictures.

I’ve had a lot of fun transforming this room, and it feels so much more relaxing now. I love relaxing in here in the evenings with a cup of coffee and a good book. Anyone want to join me for a cup ‘o joe some evening?! 🙂
